1 of final 2 New Orleans jail escapees found in Airbnb after sheriff received tip: Police
The recent recapture of Antoine Massey, one of the final two escapees from a New Orleans jailbreak last month, marks a significant step in restoring safety and security to the community. After six weeks on the run, Massey was located and arrested in a residence in New Orleans on Friday evening, thanks to a tip from a vigilant citizen to Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson.
During a press briefing, New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick confirmed that Massey surrendered peacefully to law enforcement who had surrounded the house. The residence where Massey was found turned out to be an Airbnb, raising suspicions of potential accomplices who may have helped him evade capture for so long. Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges emphasized the importance of investigating individuals who may have aided Massey in his escape.
Massey will now be transported to a secure state correctional facility outside of the area, as announced by Louisiana State Police. At the time of his escape, Massey was facing charges of domestic abuse battery involving strangulation, theft of a motor vehicle, and a parole violation. State police hinted at the possibility of additional charges being brought against Massey in the future.
Massey was part of a group of 10 inmates who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center, with Derrick Groves being the last remaining escapee still at large. Groves, convicted of two counts of second-degree murder and facing a life sentence without parole, remains a top priority for law enforcement. Authorities have urged Groves to peacefully turn himself in, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring a safe and peaceful resolution to his capture.
Darriana Burton, Groves’ girlfriend, was arrested for allegedly assisting in his escape. The affidavit for her arrest warrant revealed her active involvement in planning the escape, including relaying crucial information and coordinating communications between Groves and external contacts. The escape of the inmates sparked a massive manhunt, leading to the eventual capture of most of the fugitives in various locations.
In response to the jailbreak, the sheriff’s office is implementing measures to enhance security at the facility, including installing new razor wire, tightening physical barriers, and upgrading locking mechanisms. These improvements are aimed at preventing future escapes and ensuring the safety of residents, staff, and the community at large.
The collaborative efforts of law enforcement, community members, and partners have proven instrumental in bringing fugitives like Massey to justice. The successful recapture of Massey underscores the dedication and persistence of authorities in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the well-being of the public.
