100 cats rescued from Long Island house of filth: officials
Around 100 neglected cats were recently rescued from a horrifying situation in a Long Island home, where they were living in squalor and filth. The owner of the house, Grace Etzelsberger, is suspected of selling the cats online for large sums of money. The rescue operation was launched after an anonymous tip led authorities to the West Islip residence, where they found over 80 Maine Coon cats in terrible condition.
According to Roy Gross, the chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, the conditions inside the home were deplorable, with the overpowering stench of cat urine and feces filling the air. The cats were matted, covered in dirt and fleas, underweight, and suffering from open sores. It was a heartbreaking sight for the rescuers who spent nearly 24 hours removing the cats from the house.
Grace Etzelsberger, the owner of the cats, was charged with misdemeanor animal neglect following the rescue operation. Investigators are also looking into whether she was a licensed breeder, as she had been breeding cats for over two decades. Her website and social media accounts, where she used to advertise the cats for sale, have been taken down since the raid.
The house has been condemned by the town of Islip fire marshal and deemed uninhabitable. The rescued cats have been examined by veterinarians and are now up for adoption with the assistance of various rescue groups on Long Island. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that all the cats have been accounted for and are safe.
Neighbors in the area expressed shock at the discovery, with one resident mentioning concerns about the health risks associated with having so many cats in one place. The community is grateful for the efforts of the rescue teams and is hopeful that the cats will find loving homes where they can receive the care and attention they deserve.
