100 million Americans on alert for extreme heat, humidity

A significant portion of the United States is bracing for extreme heat and humidity, with over 100 million Americans under alert. The heatwave is expected to impact areas from Texas to Maine, with temperatures soaring and humidity making it feel even hotter.

Heat advisories have been issued for regions stretching from Texas to West Virginia, where temperatures are expected to reach between 105 and 110 degrees. In major cities along the Eastern Seaboard, the heat index – which factors in humidity – could make it feel like 103 degrees in Boston, 104 degrees in New York City, and a scorching 109 degrees in Washington, D.C.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat levels anticipated could pose risks to anyone lacking adequate cooling or hydration. Little relief is expected overnight, with the oppressive heat persisting.

A slight reprieve is anticipated later on Friday as a cold front moves in, bringing showers and thunderstorms that may cool down parts of New England. However, the sweltering conditions are forecasted to continue through the weekend and into next week, affecting the Midwest and Southeast. Heat indices could reach as high as 113 degrees in North Carolina and 110 degrees from St. Louis to Tampa.

Parts of the Southeast are under an extreme heat risk from Sunday through Thursday, emphasizing the importance of staying cool and hydrated during this period. Meanwhile, Kansas City, Missouri, is facing a flash flood watch, with reports of vehicles stranded in high water and multiple water rescues taking place.

More rain is expected from southwest Kansas to central Illinois, with the possibility of heavy downpours leading to flooding in some areas. The National Weather Service advises residents in affected regions to limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and seek out air-conditioned spaces to stay safe during the extreme heat.
