13-year-old twin sisters took parents’ car for destructive joyride through NJ nabe because they were ‘bored’: police

A pair of 13-year-old twin sisters in New Jersey caused chaos in their neighborhood early Monday morning when they took their parents’ car for a joyride. The incident occurred in the Canterbury Mews condo complex, where the girls, who were allowed to stay up late due to the Veterans’ Day holiday, decided to take the SUV out for a spin after growing bored at home.

The joyride was anything but smooth, as the teens zig-zagged across the residential road, crashing into fences, air conditioning units, and curbs along the way. The chaotic ride culminated in the SUV slamming into the back of a condo before the girls reversed and sped back home in a panic.

Neighbors were startled awake by the commotion, with one resident describing the sound of the crash as similar to a bomb going off. Concerned neighbors called the police, who were able to trace the damage back to the twins’ home thanks to the front-end damage on the parked SUV in the driveway.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, and the condo that was struck was deemed safe to inhabit by a building inspector. Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik expressed gratitude that the situation did not end tragically, noting that the teens will be issued traffic citations for their reckless behavior.

In a neighboring town, Gloucester Township, a new ordinance was recently approved that holds parents accountable for their children’s unruly behavior. The ordinance was a response to a series of TikTok-fueled brawls that plagued the state over the summer.

The teens’ impromptu joyride serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible behavior behind the wheel and the potential consequences of reckless actions. It also highlights the need for parents to be aware of their children’s activities and to set appropriate boundaries to prevent similar incidents in the future.
