156 dogs, cats rescued from horror home of elderly Utah hoarder
The discovery of over 150 dogs crammed into a hoarder’s home in Utah last month shocked authorities and animal lovers alike. The homeowner, 73-year-old Miguel Salgado-Vargas, was not present during the police sweep, but the bodycam footage obtained by KUTV revealed a horrifying scene of neglect and squalor.
As officers approached the house, they were met with a cacophony of barks and howls emanating from inside. Upon entering, they were confronted with a nightmarish sight – small dogs packed into cardboard boxes, scampering among piles of trash and decaying mattresses. The stench and dust were so overwhelming that officers had to don gas masks to navigate through the filth.
In total, 156 animals were rescued from the deplorable conditions and taken to a local animal shelter by the Ogden Police Department. Salgado-Vargas now faces 637 misdemeanor charges, including animal cruelty and unlicensed animal and kennel violations.
Fortunately, the majority of the rescued animals have been adopted into loving homes, thanks to the efforts of the Weber County Animal Shelter and the support of the community. Donations have poured in to assist with the care and rehabilitation of these neglected animals.
The shocking case of animal hoarding serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for stringent laws to prevent such cruelty. It is heartening to see the compassion and generosity of the community in response to this tragedy, as they come together to give these animals a second chance at a happy and healthy life.
