19-year-old suspect in Mississippi synagogue fire indicted on state hate crime charges

A shocking incident occurred in Jackson, Mississippi, when a 19-year-old man was indicted on arson and hate crime charges for setting fire to the only synagogue in the area. Stephen Spencer Pittman was charged with first-degree arson with a hate crime enhancement after confessing to the crime, citing the building’s “Jewish ties” as his motive.

District Attorney Jody Owens II announced the indictment, emphasizing the severity of the offense due to its religiously motivated nature. He stated that such crimes strike at the core of community values and the right to worship freely, warranting enhanced penalties under Mississippi law.

If convicted, Pittman could face up to 60 years in prison, reflecting the state’s commitment to holding perpetrators of hate crimes accountable. The charges come in the wake of federal prosecutors also filing arson charges against Pittman for damaging property involved in interstate commerce.

According to an FBI affidavit, Pittman callously referred to the synagogue as the “synagogue of Satan” and expressed satisfaction at the attack, claiming he had “finally got them.” The fire caused significant damage to the historic Beth Israel Congregation, a temple that had previously been targeted by the Ku Klux Klan in 1967.

The FBI investigation revealed that the synagogue also housed the Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life, which provides services to Jewish communities across multiple states. Security footage showed Pittman purchasing gasoline, breaking into the building, and starting the fire using a torch lighter.

Pittman’s father played a crucial role in the investigation, alerting authorities to his son’s involvement and providing incriminating text messages. Pittman admitted to his father that he had set the fire and sustained burns during the act. He also confessed to leaving his cell phone at the scene, which was recovered by the FBI.

The community was left reeling from the senseless act of violence, with authorities working diligently to ensure justice is served. Pittman’s heinous actions have underscored the importance of combating hate crimes and protecting places of worship from such despicable acts.
