2 dead, more than a dozen injured in Austin bar mass shooting, police say

The city of Austin, Texas was rocked by a tragic incident early on Sunday, as two individuals lost their lives and more than a dozen others sustained injuries in a mass shooting at a local bar. The chaotic scene unfolded at Buford’s Bar just before 2 a.m. local time, where three officers from the Austin Police Department encountered a suspect brandishing a gun. In a swift and decisive response, the officers opened fire, ultimately resulting in the suspect being fatally shot.

Mayor Kirk Watson expressed gratitude for the rapid and effective actions of the public safety officials, emphasizing that their swift response undoubtedly saved lives. The Austin Police Department issued a statement urging the public to steer clear of the area near the 600 block of Rio Grande Street, where the tragic incident took place.

Images and footage from the scene depicted a significant emergency response, with paramedics and law enforcement swiftly arriving on site. Chief Robert Luckwitz of the Austin-Travis County EMS disclosed that three individuals, including the suspect, were pronounced dead at the scene, while an additional 14 victims were rushed to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

Amidst the chaos, the Austin Fire Department responded to what they classified as an “Active Attack” call on West 6th St., coordinating efforts with the Austin Police Department and Austin-Travis County EMS. The department issued a warning on social media, advising the public to avoid the area and emphasizing the ongoing nature of the situation.
