25 countries sign statement calling for end of war in Gaza

Twenty-five countries have come together to issue a joint statement demanding an immediate end to the war in Gaza. They accuse Israel of not allowing sufficient aid into the region, which they argue is a violation of international humanitarian law. The signatories, including foreign ministers from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, and other countries, are calling on Israel to comply with its obligations under international law and ensure that essential humanitarian assistance reaches the civilian population in Gaza.

The statement follows a tragic incident on Sunday where at least 81 Palestinians were killed and 150 injured while trying to access food aid near the Zikim border between Gaza and Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces claim they fired in response to an immediate threat, but the high number of casualties has raised concerns.

In response to the joint statement, a spokesperson for the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the claims, stating that Hamas is the party responsible for the lack of a ceasefire deal. The spokesperson emphasized that Hamas started the war and is prolonging it by refusing to accept ceasefire proposals.

The situation in Gaza has been described as a humanitarian crisis, with reports of malnutrition and severe shortages of basic necessities. The United Nations Secretary-General has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating conditions in Gaza and condemned the violence targeting civilians.

The signatory countries are urging the Israeli government to lift restrictions on aid flow and enable humanitarian organizations to operate safely in Gaza. They are calling for all parties to protect civilians and uphold international humanitarian law. The statement also calls for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire, emphasizing the need for a political solution to bring security and peace to Israelis, Palestinians, and the entire region.

The Pope has also joined in the calls for peace, urging an end to the violence and a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Gaza. As the international community continues to push for an end to the war, efforts are being made to alleviate the suffering of civilians and bring about a lasting ceasefire.
