3 firefighters hurt after crash causes gas explosion at veterinary clinic; driver charged with DWI

A devastating incident occurred in North Carolina on Tuesday when a hit-and-run driver crashed into a veterinary clinic, triggering a gas explosion that injured three firefighters. Jason Lee Beach, 46, was charged with multiple offenses including felony DWI with serious injury, possession of drug paraphernalia, hit and run, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane. He is currently in custody at the New Hanover County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.

The chaotic events began around 11 a.m. on Tuesday when a vehicle collided with the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center on New Centre Drive, causing a gas line to rupture. The driver fled the scene before authorities arrived, leaving behind a dangerous situation.

As Wilmington firefighters conducted a search of the building to ensure it was evacuated, a sudden gas explosion rocked the area. Three firefighters were caught in the blast, with one suffering severe burns to the hands and arms. The other two firefighters sustained injuries that were fortunately not life-threatening. All three were swiftly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Despite the intense situation, there were no civilians inside the building at the time of the explosion. Fire crews worked diligently to secure the gas leak and bring the fire under control, preventing further damage and ensuring the safety of the surrounding area.

Following the chaos, police were able to locate and apprehend Beach, who had attempted to flee the scene after the initial crash. This swift action helped bring some closure to the traumatic event and allowed authorities to begin investigating the circumstances leading up to the destructive chain of events.
