36-year-old travels the world in a Toyota Tacoma: Her No. 1 takeaway
Ashley Kaye’s father passed away in 2015, leaving her with her childhood home in Waterford, Wisconsin. At 27, she was working long hours in corporate healthcare and contemplating a shift to consulting. Feeling like a zombie in her routine, Kaye met someone on a scuba diving trip who inspired her to leave her career behind and travel full-time. This encounter changed her perspective, leading her to quit her job the following year.
During her travels, Kaye received news of her aunt’s illness while in South Africa, prompting her to return to Wisconsin. This experience solidified her desire to sell her home and pursue a life of travel. After preparing her childhood home for sale, Kaye considered van life as a way to explore the world with her dog.
Following a chance encounter with a couple who shared their overlanding experiences, Kaye purchased a Toyota Tacoma truck for her adventures. She embarked on a journey down to Baja California, Mexico, where she planned renovations to make her truck more livable. Despite the spontaneous nature of her decision, Kaye invested over $50,000 in upgrades, including solar power, a camper, and other essentials.
With her truck ready, Kaye set out on the Pan-American Highway, starting in Denver and heading south. Reflecting on her travels, she emphasizes the importance of living life to the fullest and cherishing the freedom to explore new places. Despite the challenges of solo travel, Kaye finds fulfillment in the unique experiences and breathtaking landscapes she encounters along the way. If you have big dreams and goals in life, don’t feel like you have to make drastic changes like quitting your career to pursue them. According to Kaye, the key is to start now and the rest will fall into place as you work towards your goals.
Kaye credits her father for instilling in her the belief that she is capable of achieving anything she sets her mind to. Growing up, her father constantly reminded her that she had the potential to be whatever she wanted in life. His passing at the age of 57 taught her the importance of seizing the moment and living life to the fullest, as we never know how much time we have.
As a testament to her father’s teachings, Kaye decided to purchase a Toyota Tacoma for $42,934, a decision that reflects her commitment to following her dreams and making the most of her life.
