4 dead, 11 injured after speeding car crashes into business, pedestrians
A tragic incident unfolded in Tampa, Florida, as a speeding driver lost control of their vehicle, resulting in the death of at least four individuals and injuring 11 others. The driver crashed into a local business, striking more than a dozen people in the process. The vehicle had been previously seen street racing in the area, according to police reports.
The victims of the crash included those who died at the scene, with a fourth victim succumbing to their injuries at the hospital. One individual remains in critical condition, while eight others are stable and receiving treatment at various medical facilities. Two additional individuals were treated for minor injuries at the crash site.
Silas Sampson, aged 22, was apprehended by authorities at the scene of the crash. The suspect was reportedly driving recklessly on I-275, exiting the interstate at a high rate of speed. Despite police attempts to stop the vehicle using a PIT maneuver, the driver continued to speed towards their tragic destination.
Law enforcement had been monitoring the vehicle around 12:45 a.m., with air service assisting in tracking its movements. Following an unsuccessful attempt to halt the driver, the vehicle ultimately crashed into the business, causing devastation and loss of life.
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed profound sadness over the incident, labeling it a “senseless tragedy.” He extended condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized the commitment of the Tampa Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol to seek justice for those affected by the reckless driving that led to such a devastating outcome.
