According to Simmons, the shooting occurred as people gathered in downtown Leland after the game. In addition to the four fatalities, approximately 20 individuals sustained injuries and were initially taken to a hospital in Greenville. Subsequently, they were airlifted to a larger medical facility in Jackson, where they remain in critical condition.
Authorities from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, along with other law enforcement agencies, are actively investigating the incident. Simmons expressed confidence in the information provided, emphasizing the chaotic nature of the scene following the shooting.
Describing the town of Leland, with a population of fewer than 4,000, as a place where people were simply enjoying themselves, Simmons lamented the senseless violence that transpired.
