49ers lose Brock Purdy vs. Rams after injury setback
The San Francisco 49ers are facing yet another setback due to injuries as quarterback Brock Purdy will miss the upcoming game against the Rams on Thursday due to a toe injury. This means that Mac Jones will be stepping in for his third start of the season, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This will be Purdy’s third absence in just five weeks, having previously dealt with a shoulder and toe injury in Week 1 which caused him to miss two games.
In addition to Purdy, the 49ers will also be without their starting wide receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ankle, ribs). This adds to the injury list that already includes star tight end George Kittle, who is on injured reserve until at least Week 5 due to a hamstring injury sustained in the season opener.
Despite the challenges, the 49ers have managed a 3-1 record so far, but suffered an unexpected loss to the Jaguars in their last game. Purdy, in particular, struggled in the game against the Jaguars, throwing two interceptions and completing only 57.9% of his passes. Pearsall and Jennings also had a lackluster performance with a combined six catches for 70 yards.
In Purdy’s absence, Mac Jones has been a reliable replacement, winning both games he started and throwing for 563 yards with four touchdown passes and just one interception. The 49ers will be relying on backup wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Kendrick Bourne, along with tight end Jake Tonges, to step up in the upcoming game. They will also be looking to star running back Christian McCaffrey to have a big game.
The 49ers are hopeful for a healthier roster when they face the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay on October 12th. Despite the challenges, the team remains optimistic about their season moving forward.
