5 shot, 1 fatally, as multiple gunmen open fire in New York City park: NYPD
A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday night at Haffen Park in the Bronx, New York City, where a man lost his life and four others were injured in a shooting that occurred during a basketball tournament. The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported that the gunfire erupted around 7:27 p.m., with multiple shooters opening fire inside the park, causing panic among the gathered crowd.
911 callers alerted the authorities about the shooting, prompting a swift response from officers to the scene in the Baychester neighborhood. Upon arrival, they found a 32-year-old man shot in the chest and a 17-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to her face. Both victims were rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, where the man tragically succumbed to his injuries, while the young girl remained in critical condition.
In addition to these victims, three others arrived at hospitals in private vehicles seeking medical attention. A 30-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman had sustained gunshot wounds to their backs and were listed in stable condition. Another man, aged 42, was shot in the arm and taken to Montefiore Hospital, also in stable condition.
The NYPD has refrained from releasing the deceased man’s identity until his family is notified. Several individuals were detained for questioning shortly after the incident, although it remains unclear if any charges have been filed against them.
Authorities are actively investigating the motive behind the shooting and urge any witnesses to come forward and assist in the ongoing probe. This incident marked the second consecutive weekend where the NYPD responded to a mass shooting event, following a similar tragedy at the Taste of the City Lounge in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood.
The recent spate of violence comes amidst an overall decrease in homicides and shooting incidents citywide, according to the latest NYPD crime statistics. Despite these positive trends, the community remains on edge as law enforcement works tirelessly to address these senseless acts of violence and ensure the safety of all residents.
