5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos, father ordered released from immigration detention center

Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, who are asylum seekers, were recently arrested in Minnesota. However, a federal judge in Texas ordered their release on Saturday. U.S. District Judge Fred Biery mandated that the boy and his father be released from the immigration detention center at Dilley by no later than Feb. 3. The judge also prohibited any removal or transfer of the pair while they remain in detention.

The boy was apprehended by immigration officials shortly after returning home from preschool, while his father was in the driveway. Both were then taken to a federal detention facility in Texas. Although they had a pending asylum case, there was no order of deportation against them. The Department of Homeland Security claimed that the father abandoned his son when agents tried to arrest him, but conflicting accounts from the family’s attorney and school officials suggest otherwise.

Judge Biery temporarily halted the removal of Liam and his father from the district in Texas pending a habeas case challenging their detention. In his order releasing them, Biery criticized the government’s pursuit of daily deportation quotas, which he described as traumatizing children. He emphasized the need for a more orderly and humane policy for handling asylum cases.

The judge concluded his opinion with a photo of the five-year-old when he was detained, highlighting the impact of the situation on such a young child. The superintendent of the school district attended by Liam expressed relief at the news of their release and called for the reunification of families who have been unjustly separated.

In light of these developments, it is evident that the immigration system needs to be reformed to prioritize the well-being of children and families seeking asylum in the United States. The case of Liam and his father serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of harsh immigration policies and the importance of compassion in addressing these complex issues.
