50,000 bees killed in ‘deliberate’ arson of hives at family-owned Pennsylvania farm

The Bedillion family shared their distress on Facebook, revealing that approximately 50 beehives were targeted in the arson attack, resulting in the tragic loss of around 50,000 bees. Images posted by the farm depicted the charred remains of the hives, with the boxes and pallets completely destroyed in the blaze. Despite the significant setback, the Bedillions expressed their determination to regroup and rebuild in the face of this senseless act of violence.

Lily Bedillion, the couple’s daughter, recounted the moment of shock and devastation upon arriving at the scene of the crime. She described the eerie sight of squares of ash where the hives once stood, emphasizing the heartbreaking impact of the incident on their livelihood and the well-being of the bees.

The Bedillion Honey Farm, known for its retail shop in Hickory offering a variety of farm products such as honey, candles, and soaps, was deeply affected by the loss of the hives. Sarah Bedillion, who manages the shop, lamented the destruction of the bees and estimated the damage to be around 50 hives, translating to tens of thousands of lost bees.

In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe fundraiser was launched to help the farm recoup the loss of the hives and equipment. The campaign has already garnered over $23,500 towards its $35,000 goal, showcasing the outpouring of support from the community in the wake of the devastating incident.

The Bedillion family has taken proactive steps by filing a police report and offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the fire. Despite the challenges faced, the farm remains resilient and committed to caring for their remaining hives as they navigate this difficult time.
