7 civilians killed, thousands displaced amid Thailand-Cambodia border clashes
The recent border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand have resulted in a tragic loss of lives and displacement of thousands of civilians. According to the Cambodian Ministry of National Defense, at least seven civilians have been killed, and around 20 others have been injured in the ongoing conflict. The attacks by Thai forces have also forced more than 20,000 people from their homes in various communities, causing significant damage to infrastructure, temples, and disrupting public services.
The Cambodian ministry reported that the Thai military has been launching long-range munitions into civilian settlements located up to 30 kilometers from the border, resulting in further tragedies and damages. On the other side, the Royal Thai Army confirmed that one Thai soldier has been killed, and 29 others have been injured in the renewed combat along the contested frontier territory. The army stated that Cambodian forces have been continuously attacking their positions with various weapons, including BM-21 multiple-launch rockets, bomb-dropping drones, and kamikaze drones.
As the clashes escalate, more than 125,000 people have sought refuge in temporary shelters set up on the Thai side of the border. The conflict has spread to several provinces along the Cambodia-Thailand border, with both sides blaming each other for initiating the fighting. This latest eruption of violence comes just months after a ceasefire agreement between the two nations.
Cambodia and Thailand have a long history of territorial disputes along their 500-mile land border. The two Southeast Asian nations have struggled to resolve these issues, leading to periodic outbreaks of violence and tension. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging both countries to seek peaceful solutions to their border conflicts. The ongoing clashes serve as a reminder of the fragile nature of border disputes and the need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further bloodshed.
