8 of 9 missing skiers found dead following California backcountry avalanche
Tragedy struck in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains as a group of backcountry skiers faced a deadly avalanche. Eight skiers lost their lives, with one still missing as rescue efforts continue. The incident occurred near Donner Pass, where dangerous conditions persist due to heavy snowfall from a winter storm.
Search and rescue teams worked tirelessly to save six other skiers who were part of the guided group. Despite the challenging weather conditions, rescuers managed to locate the survivors, who had taken shelter under a tarp. The survivors were able to make a distress call using an iPhone satellite SOS message, leading to their rescue.
The avalanche, which occurred at an elevation of 8,200 feet in the Castle Peak area, involved a group of 15 skiers, including guides from Blackbird Mountain Guides. The group was returning to the trailhead after a three-day trip when the avalanche struck. Preliminary reports indicated that the avalanche was strong enough to cause significant harm, measuring a D2.5 on the Destructive Force Scale.
The Sierra Avalanche Center had issued warnings of high avalanche danger in the backcountry, raising concerns about the decision to venture into the rugged terrain. The area had seen significant snow accumulation, weak snowpack layers, and gale-force winds, creating hazardous conditions for avalanches.
Blackbird Mountain Guides, the company leading the excursion, had posted a video on Instagram warning about abnormal snowpack conditions prior to the incident. The guides emphasized the importance of paying attention to potential hazards during the storm cycle.
As rescue efforts continue and the investigation into the tragedy unfolds, questions arise about the decision-making process that led to the group’s presence in the avalanche-prone area. Authorities have closed Interstate 80 over Donner Summit due to whiteout conditions, adding to the challenges faced by rescue teams.
The tragic events serve as a reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous nature of backcountry skiing, highlighting the importance of safety precautions, avalanche awareness, and preparedness in extreme winter conditions. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.
