9 dead, dozens hurt in fire at assisted-living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts: Officials
Nine people tragically lost their lives and dozens were injured in a devastating fire that swept through an assisted-living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts. The fire broke out on Sunday night at the Gabriel House assisted-living facility, prompting a massive response from about 50 firefighters, including 30 who were off duty at the time.
Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon reported that some residents had to be rescued through their windows due to the challenging layout of the building. In a heroic effort, approximately 12 non-ambulatory residents were physically carried out by police officers. Thirty individuals, including five firefighters, were hospitalized following the five-alarm fire. While one person remains in critical condition, the firefighters have been released from the hospital.
The Gabriel House, which housed around 70 residents, has been evacuated and is now clear. It is unclear whether the building’s sprinkler system activated during the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with initial reports suggesting that it may have been sparked by an electrical or mechanical issue rather than intentional arson.
Governor Maura Healey expressed her condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, praising the heroic efforts of the firefighters and first responders. She emphasized the need for unity and support within the Fall River community during this difficult time. The investigation into the fire is ongoing, with officials examining the building’s history and maintenance records for potential clues.
The Gabriel House, constructed in 1964 with a renovation in 2000, was listed as being in average-good physical condition earlier this year. As authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the fire, the community mourns the loss of life and prays for the speedy recovery of those injured.
