Danish pension fund to sell $100 million in U.S. Treasuries due to “poor U.S. government finances”
A Danish pension fund, AkademikerPension, has announced plans to divest its entire holdings of U.S. Treasuries, amounting to approximately $100 million. The decision stems from concerns about the financial stability of the U.S. government, prompting the fund to seek alternative avenues for liquidity and risk management. Anders Schelde, the chief investment officer of AkademikerPension, cited the downgrade of the U.S. credit rating by Moody’s Ratings in May as a contributing factor to the decision.
For years, AkademikerPension has utilized U.S. Treasuries as a source of liquidity. However, the fund is now looking to shift its focus to the U.S. dollar and short-duration debt. The move comes at a time when President Trump has intensified his efforts to acquire Greenland, a Danish territory. While Schelde clarified that the decision is not directly linked to the U.S.-Europe rift, he acknowledged that the geopolitical tensions have added complexity to the situation.
President Trump’s proposals to impose tariffs on major NATO trading partners until a deal is reached for the purchase of Greenland have raised concerns among investors. The announcement of tariffs led to a decline in U.S. and European stocks, reflecting the interconnectedness of global financial markets. European countries, including Denmark, hold a significant amount of U.S. debt, highlighting the potential impact of geopolitical developments on international investments.
Despite the Danish sell-off of U.S. Treasuries, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed confidence in the stability of the U.S. bond market. He downplayed the significance of Denmark’s divestment, emphasizing that it represents a small fraction of overall U.S. debt holdings. Bessent’s remarks came during a press conference at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he reassured investors about the resilience of the U.S. Treasury market.
In a dynamic and interconnected global economy, geopolitical tensions and policy uncertainties can influence investment decisions. AkademikerPension’s strategic shift away from U.S. Treasuries underscores the importance of proactive risk management in navigating volatile financial landscapes. As the fund realigns its investment portfolio, the implications of geopolitical developments on international markets continue to be closely monitored.
