A 6.0 magnitude earthquake shakes southeastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border
KABUL, Afghanistan — A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck southeastern Afghanistan close to the Pakistan border on Sunday night, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake’s epicenter was located 36 kilometers (22 miles) north of Bāsawul, Afghanistan, with a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to the USGS. The earthquake occurred at 11:47 p.m. local time on Sunday, with no immediate reports of damage.
Just a few weeks earlier, on October 7, 2023, a devastating magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit Afghanistan, triggering strong aftershocks. The Taliban government estimated the death toll to be around 4,000, while the U.N. reported a lower figure of approximately 1,500 casualties. This earthquake marked one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent Afghan history.
