A Chinese humanoid robot walked 66 miles in 3 days, right into the Guinness World Records
Shanghai — A Chinese robot has made history by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance ever walked by a humanoid machine. The AgiBot A2, a five feet and six inches tall robot, embarked on a three-day journey covering 66 miles from Suzhou to Shanghai’s Bund area.
According to Guinness World Records, the two-legged AgiBot A2 navigated various surfaces and adhered to traffic regulations during its impressive trek. The robot maker, AgiBot, based in Shanghai, showcased the robot’s abilities in video clips, showing it walking alongside cyclists and scooters before reaching the iconic Shanghai skyline.
The advancement of physical AI is a focal point for tech firms worldwide, with predictions of over a billion humanoid robots by 2050. In line with this trend, the Chinese government has been actively supporting domestic companies in developing humanoid robots to lead the global robotics industry.
Earlier this year, Beijing hosted the inaugural humanoid robot games, showcasing over 500 participants competing in various disciplines. AgiBot’s A2 is specifically designed for customer service roles, equipped with chat functions and lip-reading capabilities.
Experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) emphasize the importance of AI and robotics in enhancing human capabilities. Professor Daniela Rus from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab believes that AI and robots offer cognitive and physical superpowers, enabling individuals to extend their reach, refine precision, and amplify strengths.
Research firm Gartner predicts that by 2030, 80% of Americans will engage with autonomous, AI-powered robots on a daily basis. This projection highlights the increasing integration of robotics into daily life and various industries.
