A conductor gained 40 pounds in a matter of weeks. It took open-heart surgery to learn why

Conductor John Mauceri has faced a series of health challenges over the past few years. From psoriatic arthritis to chronic lymphocytic leukemia and interstitial lung disease, he has battled through various conditions with the help of medication. However, in December 2023, at the age of 78, Mauceri contracted COVID-19, which led to complications that landed him in the emergency room at NYU Langone.
Doctors discovered viral pneumonia and severe lung disease, prompting the removal of three liters of fluid from his right lung. While relieved that there was no cancer recurrence, Mauceri soon began experiencing new symptoms, including swelling in his left ankle that spread throughout his body. Despite the efforts of multiple specialists, the cause of his symptoms remained elusive.
Dr. Adam Skolnick, a cardiologist at NYU Langone, eventually suspected pericardial constriction, a rare condition where scarring thickens the sac around the heart, leading to swelling in the legs and abdomen. With no definitive tests available, Mauceri underwent open-heart surgery in June 2024 to confirm the diagnosis and treat the condition.
During the surgery, Dr. Eugene Grossi discovered that Mauceri’s heart was trapped inside a thick layer of scarring, preventing it from functioning properly. The delicate procedure involved carefully removing the pericardium and scar tissue to relieve the pressure on the heart. Following a successful surgery, Mauceri began to regain his strength and health.
After a brief setback with a small intestine blockage, Mauceri made a remarkable recovery and was able to return to conducting orchestras in December 2024. His renewed vigor and determination were evident as he conducted performances in London, Paris, and Tokyo. Despite turning 80 shortly after his upcoming concert at the Hollywood Bowl, Mauceri shows no signs of slowing down.
Grateful for the second chance at life given to him by his medical team, Mauceri embraces each day as a miracle and a gift. With plans to continue his musical career and travel the country for concerts, he remains thankful for the expertise and care provided by his doctors. The journey of resilience and triumph over adversity serves as an inspiration to all who face challenges in life.
