A mild symptom was bothering a young dad. He had Stage IV lung cancer.

Kevin Humphrey, an endurance athlete, had always been accustomed to pushing his body to its limits. Participating in ultramarathons and other grueling events was a regular part of his life. Even when he wasn’t training, his two young sons kept him active. However, in January 2024, Humphrey began experiencing persistent back pain that wouldn’t go away. This discomfort was coupled with a troubling cough that persisted even after being diagnosed with pneumonia.

Seeking a second opinion at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, Humphrey received shocking news. A tumor was discovered in his left lung, crushing his windpipe and causing the pain and coughing. This diagnosis of Stage IV non-small cell adenocarcinoma came as a complete surprise to Humphrey, who had never smoked and had no family history of lung cancer.

Despite the grim prognosis, Humphrey and his medical team devised an aggressive treatment plan combining targeted immunotherapy with chemotherapy. This approach aimed to shrink the tumor and make it operable. After undergoing surgery to remove most of the cancer, Humphrey faced a challenging recovery that left him uncertain about his future in endurance sports.

However, his determination and focus on the Michigan Ironman 70.3 race a year after his surgery kept him motivated. Despite the physical and emotional challenges, Humphrey crossed the finish line in just under five and a half hours, reflecting on the journey he had been through over the past year.

With a complete response to treatment and no evidence of disease in his body, Humphrey’s medical outlook is positive. Regular monitoring and continued immunotherapy ensure that he remains healthy and active. Just a month after the Ironman, Humphrey participated in the Chicago marathon, finishing with pride despite a slower time than before.

Humphrey’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of hope in the face of adversity. His journey from a shocking cancer diagnosis to crossing finish lines in endurance races serves as an inspiration to all facing challenges in their lives.
