A toddler was given just 3 years to live after his mom noticed worrying symptoms. He proved everyone wrong.
When Meghan Jenkins returned to work after taking a year off, her world was filled with the joy and energy of her toddler, Malachi. He was a vibrant young boy who loved dinosaurs, monster trucks, and the Miami Dolphins. Life was busy but happy for the mother-son duo until March 2021 when Malachi started showing signs of illness.
What started as fatigue and a lingering cough quickly escalated when Malachi vomited and had black stool. Concerned, Jenkins rushed him to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The news was devastating – Malachi’s life expectancy was only two and a half to three years.
Understanding Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
ALL is a rare cancer that originates in the bone marrow, leading to the production of immature white blood cells. Malachi’s white blood cell count was abnormally high, weakening his immune system and making him susceptible to infections. The cancer can spread rapidly to various organs, requiring immediate treatment.
Under the care of Dr. Julio Barredo, Malachi began chemotherapy to combat the aggressive cancer. The initial phase of treatment was intense, with Malachi experiencing side effects such as nausea and fatigue. Jenkins had to watch her son struggle through the challenges of treatment, all while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy.
Malachi’s Journey to Recovery
Despite the hardships, Malachi responded well to chemotherapy, eventually transitioning to at-home treatment. The maintenance phase followed, with Malachi taking oral medication and making regular visits to the hospital. After two years of rigorous treatment, Malachi reached a significant milestone – he completed his cancer treatment.
Today, Malachi is a thriving 7-year-old who excels in school and enjoys his favorite pastimes. He is in remission, surpassing the initial prognosis and giving hope for a bright future. While there is a slight risk of relapse, Malachi’s resilience and successful treatment have significantly improved his life expectancy.
A New Chapter for Malachi and Jenkins
Despite lingering effects on Malachi’s immune system, Jenkins remains optimistic about his future. The family looks forward to leaving behind the years of treatment and trauma, focusing on creating a happy and healthy environment for Malachi to thrive.
Reflecting on their journey, Jenkins acknowledges the hardships but finds solace in the brighter days ahead. Malachi’s resilience and strength have shown that there is hope even in the darkest moments. The family is ready to embrace a new chapter filled with happiness and healing.
