Adams touts drop in major crimes in NYC across the board in annual report: ‘Delivering real results’
Crime rates in New York City have shown a significant decrease across various major categories, according to the latest annual management report released by Mayor Eric Adams. The city has experienced eight consecutive months of overall crime reduction, with six out of seven major felony categories seeing notable declines.
Murders in the city have dropped by 6%, robberies by 17%, felonious assaults by 9%, and burglaries by 5%. Additionally, grand larceny and grand larceny auto both saw a 10% decrease. The report also highlights a 14% decrease in shooting incidents, with the fewest August shootings recorded in the COMPStat era since 1993.
Mayor Adams expressed his satisfaction with the results, stating that the administration’s competent management is delivering real results for all New Yorkers. He emphasized the positive impact on issues that New Yorkers care about most, such as affordability, public safety, education, and cleanliness.
Public spaces in the city have also seen a decrease in crime, with a 12% drop in park crime, a 2% dip in transit system crime, a 5% decrease in crime at NYC Housing Authority buildings, and a 9% reduction in major felonies at schools. However, there has been a troubling increase in reported rape cases, which the NYPD attributes in part to a change in how these crimes are classified.
Despite the positive statistics, the report also highlighted improvements in NYPD response times to critical crimes in progress, with a 14-second improvement, and a 30-second gain in average response times to all crimes.
Mayor Adams also mentioned increased enforcement efforts on issues like ghost cars, illegal dumping, and potholes, as well as the successful campaign to combat the city’s rat population. Additionally, he highlighted the creation or preservation of 28,000 affordable housing units in 2025.
Overall, the management report reflects a positive trend in reducing crime rates and improving public safety in New York City under Mayor Adams’ administration. The focus on key issues like affordability, public safety, and housing demonstrates a commitment to addressing the needs of all residents and making the city a safer place for everyone.
