Advocate who offered window on living with brain cancer dies at 43

Adam Hayden was a patient advocate who faced a terminal brain cancer diagnosis at the age of 34, leaving behind his wife Whitney and their three sons. Despite the grim prognosis, Adam lived with his illness for nine years, navigating the difficult decisions that come with a fatal diagnosis.

As he entered hospice care at home in the Indianapolis suburbs, Adam and I discussed the possibility of writing another story about his experience. I was eager to explore his insights on the medical system, his daily challenges as a cancer patient, and the familial and financial hurdles he encountered. But beyond my journalistic curiosity, I cherished my conversations with Adam and his wife Whitney, finding solace in their resilience and openness.

Adam, a philosopher by training, was known for his candid and empathetic writing about his cancer journey. He embraced advocacy for brain tumor patients and shared his experiences through op-eds, blog posts, and TikTok videos. Despite the gravity of his situation, Adam maintained a lighthearted approach, often injecting humor into his updates and discussions.

Living with a terminal illness took its toll on Adam, as he witnessed the loss of fellow patients and faced the constant uncertainty of recurrence. The emotional burden and physical toll of chemotherapy treatments weighed heavily on him, leading to moments of vulnerability and reflection.

When Adam transitioned to hospice care, he found a sense of relief in letting go of the regular scans and surveillance of his tumors. With Whitney by his side, they embraced moments of levity and laughter, finding solace in simple pleasures like watching movies and enjoying White Russians together.

As Adam’s condition deteriorated, his final words, as relayed by Whitney, captured the essence of his spirit: “I just want everyone to be kind to each other.” Adam’s legacy as a patient advocate and his unwavering positivity in the face of adversity continue to inspire those who knew him.

In memory of Adam Hayden, may his message of kindness and empathy resonate with us all.
