Afghan Citizen Pleads Guilty to Election Day Terror Attack Plot in Oklahoma City

A 27-year-old citizen of Afghanistan, Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to a planned terror attack on Election Day in Oklahoma City. Tawhedi admitted to conspiring and attempting to provide material support to ISIS, a designated foreign terrorist organization, as well as receiving firearms and ammunition for the purpose of carrying out a mass-casualty attack.

Tawhedi, who was brought to the United States as a refugee in 2021 during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan under the Biden administration, confessed to collaborating with at least one other individual to purchase two AK-47 rifles, 500 rounds of ammunition, and 10 magazines with the intention of executing the attack on or around November 5, 2024. He communicated his plans with an ISIS facilitator and was arrested along with his co-conspirator, Abdullah Haji Zada, after acquiring the firearms and ammunition from an undercover FBI employee.

While Tawhedi faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for the material support charge and up to 15 years for the firearms offense, Zada, who pleaded guilty to the firearms charge in April 2025, could be sentenced to up to 15 years in federal prison. Both individuals will be permanently removed from the United States and prohibited from reentering under judicial orders of removal to Afghanistan.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi condemned Tawhedi’s actions, stating, “By pledging allegiance to ISIS and plotting an attack against innocent Americans on Election Day, this defendant endangered lives and gravely betrayed the nation that gave him refuge.” FBI Director Kash Patel commended the FBI and its partners for detecting and disrupting the terror plot, emphasizing that those who attempt to carry out attacks on American soil will face justice.
