Afghan refugee who worked alongside US troops killed over a parking spot in Texas: cops

Abdul Rahman Waziri, a heroic Afghan refugee who bravely supported American special forces in his native country, tragically lost his life in Texas over a dispute regarding a parking spot. The 31-year-old father of two infant daughters had fled to the US to escape the Taliban and seek safety for his family, only to meet a violent end in a Houston apartment complex.

According to Houston police, the fatal altercation took place in the parking lot of the Gables at Richmond apartment complex, where Waziri was shot multiple times by a neighbor following a heated argument over parking. Despite the alleged killer confessing to the shooting, he was inexplicably released without charges, prompting calls from Waziri’s family and community for justice to be served.

Described as a public execution by Waziri’s family attorney, the incident unfolded as Waziri was checking his mail and became embroiled in a dispute with the neighbor over parking space. Witnesses reported seeing the shooter vandalize Waziri’s car before a physical altercation ensued. After the fight ended, the shooter retrieved a gun and fatally shot Waziri in what was described as a cold-blooded execution.

Despite being rushed to Ben Taub General Hospital, Waziri succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving family and community. The gunman turned himself in to police and surrendered his weapon, but was ultimately released without facing charges, sparking outrage and fear among residents in the apartment complex.

Waziri, a former member of Afghanistan’s security forces who had worked closely with US troops for seven years, was remembered as a war hero who had risked his life to protect the freedoms cherished in the US. His family and supporters staged protests outside a Houston police station, demanding justice and a thorough investigation into the senseless killing of a man they regarded as a hero.

Community leaders highlighted Waziri’s selfless service alongside American Special Forces in Afghanistan, where he led dangerous missions that ultimately led to his decision to seek refuge in the US. The tragic loss of Waziri has left a void in his family and community, with calls for the shooter to be arrested and held accountable for his actions.

As police continue to investigate the shooting, the Harris County District Attorney’s office has yet to provide a response to inquiries regarding the case. The legacy of Abdul Rahman Waziri, a courageous individual who fought for freedom in his homeland and sought a better life for his family in the US, will be remembered by those who knew him.
