Afghanistan attacks Pakistani border posts in ‘revenge operation’

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Tensions escalated between Afghanistan and Pakistan on Saturday when Afghan security forces launched an attack on Pakistani border posts in response to alleged violations of Afghan territory and airspace by Pakistani forces. The Taliban government claimed that over a dozen Pakistani soldiers were killed in the attack, although Islamabad has not confirmed this information.

The incident comes after Afghan authorities accused Pakistan of carrying out bombings in Kabul and eastern Afghanistan earlier in the week. Pakistan has denied any involvement in these attacks. In response, the Taliban government’s Defense Ministry announced that Afghan forces had conducted retaliatory operations along the border. The ministry warned that Afghan armed forces are prepared to defend the nation’s borders against any further violations.

The situation further escalated when Pakistan’s Interior Minister condemned Afghanistan for the attack, vowing a strong response. The recent hostilities have raised concerns in the region, with Qatar’s Foreign Ministry urging both sides to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation.

The border crossing at Torkham, a key trade route between Afghanistan and Pakistan, remained closed following the incident. Both countries share a long border that has been a source of tension due to differing views on the border demarcation.

The skirmish between Afghan and Pakistani forces highlights the fragile security situation in the region and the potential for further escalation if diplomatic efforts are not prioritized.
