Airlines had to cancel over 13,000 U.S. flights over the weekend due to a massive winter storm causing heavy snow, ice, and bitter cold weather across the country.
On Saturday, more than 4,000 flights were canceled, with a significant number of cancellations in and out of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field.
American Airlines and Southwest Airlines were among the carriers with the highest number of flight cancellations on Saturday.
Flight cancellations more than doubled to nearly 9,100 on Sunday as the storm moved towards the mid-Atlantic and Northeast U.S., affecting major airline hubs.
Several airports, including LaGuardia, Ronald Reagan Washington National, Newark Liberty International, and John F. Kennedy International, had a high percentage of flight cancellations on Sunday.
Major airlines such as American, Delta, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines offered waivers for change and cancellation fees to help affected customers.
The National Weather Service warned of widespread heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain from the Southern Rockies to New England.
