Airlines cancel hundreds of flights Friday as shutdown stretches on

In response to the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision to limit flight capacity at 40 major U.S. airports due to the government shutdown, major airlines like American, United, and Delta have announced plans to cancel hundreds of flights. American Airlines stated that they would cancel around 220 departures out of their 6,000 daily flights starting Friday and continuing through the weekend. United Airlines also confirmed that they would cancel fewer than 200 flights out of their 5,000 daily flights. Delta Airlines announced plans to cancel approximately 170 daily flights.

Despite the cancellations, the airlines have assured passengers that they will do their best to accommodate affected travelers on alternative flights. According to a company spokesperson, about half of the customers whose flights were canceled were rebooked within 4 hours of their original departure time. The airlines have also provided information on their websites for affected travelers to check for updates and rebooking options.

Travelers across the country have expressed frustration and disappointment upon receiving notifications about their canceled flights. Caitlin Ladner, who had planned a trip to surprise her parents in Raleigh, North Carolina, expressed her disappointment upon learning about her canceled flight on the United app. Despite being offered a rescheduled flight, she decided to cancel her plans altogether due to the uncertainty surrounding the situation.

Other travelers, like Frederick Ross from Fort Myers, Florida, are reconsidering their holiday travel plans in light of potential delays and cancellations. Ross mentioned that the current travel disruptions have made him contemplate opting for a road trip instead of dealing with the uncertainties of air travel.

The cancellations mark the latest and most significant disruption to air travel since the government shutdown began over a month ago. As travelers navigate through these challenges, airlines are working to minimize the impact on passengers and provide support during this uncertain time.

Overall, the ongoing government shutdown continues to have ripple effects on various industries, with the aviation sector being one of the hardest hit. As the situation evolves, travelers are advised to stay informed about flight updates and potential disruptions while airlines work to mitigate the impact of the flight cancellations.
