Alaska Airlines flight, FedEx cargo plane nearly collide at Newark airport: Radar data

An alarming incident occurred at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey when an Alaska Airlines 737 and a FedEx 777 cargo plane came dangerously close to colliding as they attempted to land on intersecting runways. According to radar data from FlightRadar24, the incident took place around 8:17 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Alaska flight had just arrived from Portland, Oregon, while the FedEx plane had arrived from Memphis, Tennessee. Air traffic control instructed the Alaska plane to perform a go-around just seconds before it was about to touch down, when it was only 150 feet in the air. Meanwhile, the FedEx plane continued its landing on the intersecting runway.

Preliminary data from Flightradar24 indicates that the Alaska plane cleared the FedEx plane by a mere 300 to 325 feet. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that an air traffic controller had directed the Alaska Airlines Flight 294 to go around because FedEx Flight 721 was cleared for the final approach to an intersecting runway. The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident.

Both Alaska Airlines and FedEx have not yet responded to requests for comment from ABC News. The gravity of the situation highlights the importance of air traffic control protocols and the need for strict adherence to safety procedures to prevent such close calls in the future.
