All About the Serial Killer
The highly anticipated third season of Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” anthology series is set to debut on Netflix on Oct. 3. This time, the series will focus on the infamous serial killer Ed Gein, who terrorized the nation in the 1950s with his heinous crimes. Portrayed by Charlie Hunnam, the miniseries titled “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” will delve into the twisted mind of this depraved individual and explore the shocking events that redefined American violence.
Ed Gein was born in 1906 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and was raised in a disturbingly strict household by his alcoholic father George and religious zealot mother Augusta. The family moved to a farm in Plainfield, Wisconsin, where Augusta instilled in her sons a deep fear of the outside world. After George’s death in 1940, Ed and his brother Henry became the family’s breadwinners. Tragically, Henry died in a mysterious brush fire, leaving Ed even more isolated with his overbearing mother.
Following Augusta’s death in 1945, Ed descended into a life of squalor and isolation on the family farm. He developed a morbid fascination with violent stories and pulp magazines, particularly those involving Nazis and cannibals. This obsession would eventually lead him down a dark path of murder and depravity.
In 1957, Ed Gein was arrested for the kidnapping of Bernice Worden, a local store owner. When authorities searched his property, they made a horrifying discovery – Worden’s body had been skinned and decapitated, with her remains found in Gein’s barn. Further investigation revealed a gruesome collection of human body parts and skins fashioned into macabre trophies.
During questioning, Gein confessed to not only Worden’s murder but also admitted to exhuming bodies from local cemeteries. He revealed his twisted desire to create a suit made from women’s skins in a macabre attempt to become his deceased mother.
Gein’s trial was a spectacle, with his initial confessions deemed inadmissible due to police misconduct. He was ultimately found not guilty by reason of insanity and spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital until his death in 1984.
The legacy of Ed Gein has left a lasting impact on popular culture, inspiring iconic characters in films such as “Psycho,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” and “The Silence of the Lambs.” The upcoming season of “Monster” promises to delve deep into the psyche of this enigmatic killer, shedding light on the origins and aftermath of his horrific crimes.
With a stellar cast including Laurie Metcalf, Lesley Manville, and Tom Hollander, “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” is set to captivate audiences with its exploration of this true American horror story. Stay tuned for a gripping and chilling journey into the mind of one of the most infamous serial killers in history.
