Alyssa Thompson joins Chelsea in latest big money move in women’s soccer

Chelsea made a significant move in the world of women’s soccer by securing the services of Alyssa Thompson from Angel City. The U.S. international completed her transfer to Chelsea on Friday in a deal worth around 1 million pounds ($1.35 million), signing a five-year contract with the club.

At just 20 years old, Thompson expressed her excitement about joining Chelsea, stating, “Chelsea is such an amazing club, one of the best in the world. Being able to play with players that are the best in the world is an amazing opportunity at such a young age and I want to learn, grow and develop a lot.”

Thompson, who was the first pick in the 2023 NWSL draft, made history as the league’s first high schooler to be drafted. In her most recent season with Angel City, she netted six goals in 16 appearances, showcasing her talent and potential.

Describing Thompson’s playing style, Chelsea’s head of women’s football, Paul Green, praised her as a dynamic winger with electric pace, capable of playing on either wing and excelling in one-on-one situations. Green expressed confidence in Thompson’s abilities, labeling her as one of the best and most exciting young players in the world.

Thompson’s move to Chelsea coincided with London City Lionesses’ record-breaking signing of French midfielder Grace Geyoro from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported fee of 1.4 million pounds ($1.88 million). This transfer window also saw other big money moves, including the Orlando Pride’s acquisition of Mexico star Lizbeth Ovalle for $1.5 million and Canada striker Olivia Smith’s transfer from Liverpool to Arsenal for $1.3 million.

Having represented the U.S. national team at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Thompson is a regular fixture in the squad, amassing 22 appearances and three goals since 2022. Her impressive record at Angel City includes 15 goals in 69 appearances across all competitions.

Chelsea, a dominant force in English women’s soccer, has clinched six consecutive Women’s Super League titles and nine out of the last 11 championships. The club’s commitment to excellence and success on the field continues to attract top talents like Thompson, setting the stage for an exciting future for both the player and the team.
