Amazon CEO says AI will reduce its corporate workforce in coming years
Amazon CEO Expects AI to Reduce Workforce
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy predicts that the use of generative artificial intelligence will lead to a reduction in the company’s corporate workforce in the coming years.
Jassy stated in a message to employees, “We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs. It’s hard to predict the exact outcome, but we anticipate a decrease in our total corporate workforce as we implement AI extensively across the company.”
He mentioned that Amazon currently has over 1,000 generative AI services and applications in progress or completed, with plans to expand this significantly in the future.
Jassy encouraged employees to embrace Amazon’s AI initiatives and participate in training and workshops to familiarize themselves with the technology.
Amazon recently announced a $10 billion investment in building a campus in North Carolina to enhance its cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company has also committed significant funds to data center projects in Mississippi, Indiana, Ohio, and North Carolina to meet the growing demand for AI products and services.
The rise of cloud computing and artificial intelligence has led to an increased need for energy-intensive data centers. Amazon has allocated $20 billion towards constructing two data center complexes in Pennsylvania to support its operations.
In addition to infrastructure investments, Amazon has been testing AI-aided dubbing for content on its Prime streaming service and has integrated generative AI into its Alexa virtual assistant. The company has also made substantial investments in AI startups and collaborated with chipmaker Intel to develop custom AI chips for its cloud computing unit.
