Amazon customers can now file a refund claim under $2.5 billion FTC settlement. Here’s how.
Amazon customers have the opportunity to file a claim under the $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission, which addressed allegations of misleading enrollment practices in the retailer’s Prime shopping service.
In September 2025, Amazon agreed to provide $1.5 billion in refunds to eligible customers and pay a $1 billion civil penalty as part of the settlement. The FTC accused Amazon of deceiving customers into signing up for Prime and making it challenging for them to cancel their membership.
While Amazon did not admit to any wrongdoing, the settlement offers customers a chance to receive compensation. To file a claim, customers can visit the settlement website. While many eligible customers will receive automatic payments, some may need to submit a claim, particularly those who signed up for Prime through certain enrollment flows or did not fully utilize the benefits.
Customers who signed up for Prime through specific enrollment flows and used Prime benefits between three and ten times in a 12-month period may need to file a claim to receive a refund. Eligible customers will receive email or mail notifications with instructions on how to file a claim.
To file a claim, customers will need to provide the requested information, including a claim ID and PIN provided in the notification. Claims must be submitted before July 21 for consideration.
The refund amount for eligible customers can be up to $51, covering the Prime membership fees. However, some customers may receive smaller amounts based on their specific circumstances, such as signing up for a trial membership with lower fees.
Customers will be notified of their eligibility via email or mail, with a 180-day window to submit a claim. Amazon will review each claim within 30 days of receipt, and payments will be issued shortly after approval. Refunds will be distributed through PayPal, Venmo, or mailed checks, allowing customers to choose their preferred payment method.
Overall, the settlement provides a mechanism for eligible Amazon customers to receive compensation for their Prime membership fees. By following the instructions provided and submitting a claim before the deadline, customers can potentially receive a refund as part of this FTC settlement.
