Amazon cutting 14,000 jobs as the retailing giant embraces AI

Amazon made headlines on Tuesday with the announcement of cutting 14,000 corporate jobs as the company shifts its focus towards artificial intelligence and streamlining its operations. CEO Andy Jassy had previously mentioned that Amazon’s investment in AI tools would lead to a reduction in the human workforce as the company becomes more efficient.

Beth Galetti, the senior vice president of people experience and technology, addressed the workforce reduction in a message to employees, stating that it would allow Amazon to operate with the agility of a startup. She emphasized the rapid pace of technological change and the transformative impact of AI on businesses.

Amazon has been heavily investing in generative AI technology, with plans to establish a $10 billion AI innovation campus in North Carolina. This strategic focus on AI extends beyond retail, with applications in products like the Alexa voice assistant and e-commerce tools.

In a conference call with industry analysts, Jassy highlighted the immense growth potential of Amazon Web Services cloud computing business, signaling a shift towards technological infrastructure over human capital. Neil Saunders, an analyst, described the layoffs as a significant restructuring of Amazon’s corporate workforce.

Despite the corporate job cuts, Amazon announced plans to hire 250,000 seasonal workers for warehouse and transportation roles during the holiday season. This move reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to meeting customer demand and ensuring operational efficiency.
