Amazon Cutting Off Free Shipping for Millions
Amazon is making changes to its Prime sharing program, causing confusion and frustration among users. The company is phasing out the Amazon Invitee program, which allowed family members to share Prime shipping benefits and have packages sent to different addresses. Starting October 1, customers will lose access to the shared Prime delivery benefit, but can use Amazon Family as an alternative.
The decision has sparked comparisons to Netflix’s crackdown on password sharing and has been seen as a signal that the “mooch economy” is coming to an end. Amazon, however, defends its move by stating that the Invitee program has not been open to new members since 2015. The company is promoting Amazon Family as a new option for families, emphasizing that the change is necessary to streamline their services.
For customers currently sharing Prime through the Invitee program, they will need to create their own Prime accounts or join Amazon Family to maintain free expedited shipping. Impacted users are being offered a promotional Prime membership rate of $14.99 for a year. Amazon Family, which was previously known as Amazon Household, allows customers to share Prime perks with household members, including Prime Video and other digital content. However, shipping benefits can only be shared with one person who has the same primary address as the main account holder.
Despite these changes, Amazon has not announced any new efforts to crack down on password sharing. Users are also wondering if they will still be able to ship packages to family members at different addresses, but Amazon has not made any changes to its shipping policies in that regard.
Overall, Amazon’s decision to end the Invitee program in favor of Amazon Family is aimed at providing a more streamlined and efficient service for its customers. While the change may inconvenience some users, it reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to adapt and improve its offerings.
