Amazon delivered 8 billion items to its US Prime members in less than 2 days last year

Amazon (AMZN) made a significant announcement on Tuesday, revealing that its Prime members in the US received a staggering 8 billion items on the same day or next day last year. This marked a substantial 30% increase from the previous year, highlighting the company’s relentless efforts to enhance delivery times across its vast network.

“We focus on savings, convenience, and entertainment as the cornerstones of the Prime program, and so convenience has to go up and up as expectations go up and up,” stated Jamil Ghani, VP of Amazon Prime, in an interview with Yahoo Finance.

On a global scale, Prime members received 13 billion items in less than two days, underscoring Amazon’s commitment to providing expedited delivery services to its loyal customer base.

Amazon disclosed that in the US, half of the items delivered in less than two days were groceries or household essentials, resulting in members saving an average of $550 on shipping costs.

In 2025, Amazon invested a substantial $4 billion to expand its same-day and next-day delivery services to 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural communities. The company also recently announced its decision to shutter Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores to focus on delivery services and expand Whole Foods, which it acquired in 2017.

As Amazon ramps up its investments in faster delivery, it faces stiff competition from retail giant Walmart (WMT), which boasts a delivery network capable of reaching 93% of US households for same-day delivery.

Amazon has expanded its same-day delivery service for perishable goods to over 5,000 US cities, with plans for further expansion in 2026. In 2025 alone, the company delivered 70% more items in less than a day, showcasing its commitment to providing swift and efficient delivery services to its customers.

Ghani highlighted the company’s focus on building infrastructure and leveraging the lessons learned from Whole Foods to ensure a seamless, high-quality, freshness-guaranteed supply chain experience for perishable items.

Furthermore, Amazon has extended its same-day delivery network to its pharmacy business following its acquisition of PillPack in 2018. Ghani emphasized the role of AI in enhancing delivery speeds, particularly in the pharmacy segment, where Amazon has managed to reduce processing time for patients by 90% compared to industry benchmarks.

During its third-quarter earnings call, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy expressed his excitement about the opportunity to deliver more perishable groceries, citing strong adoption rates in markets where the service was introduced.

Overall, Amazon’s continued investment in faster delivery services underscores its unwavering commitment to meeting the evolving needs and expectations of its Prime members. With a focus on convenience, savings, and efficiency, Amazon is well-positioned to maintain its status as a leader in the e-commerce and delivery space.
