Amazon Prime Settlement: Refund Eligibility and How to Claim

Amazon Prime is making headlines with a groundbreaking $1.5 billion refund to millions of Prime members who were allegedly ensnared in difficult-to-cancel subscriptions, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC accused Amazon of using intricate subscription traps to coerce customers into signing up for Prime and then making it challenging to cancel. Despite denying any wrongdoing, Amazon has agreed to pay $1 billion in fines, along with $1.5 billion in customer refunds, and streamline its cancellation policy.

This settlement represents the largest payout ever by the FTC and the second-largest consumer refund in history. The distribution of $1.8 billion by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to consumers affected by credit repair companies holds the top spot.

So, who is eligible for the Amazon Prime settlement, how much can recipients expect, and when can they anticipate receiving refunds? Here’s everything you need to know.

### Who’s eligible for the Amazon Prime settlement?

To qualify for a refund, individuals must have signed up for Amazon Prime in the U.S. between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025. Eligibility also extends to those who tried but failed to cancel their Prime subscriptions during this timeframe. Both enrollment and unsuccessful cancellation attempts must have occurred within the specified period.

### How much money will I get?

Most eligible customers can anticipate receiving up to $51 in refunds. Automatic payments will be issued within the first 90 days of the FTC’s order, starting with individuals who utilized three or fewer Prime benefits within a year of signing up through specific Amazon pages. Customers who submit a valid claim after automatic payments are disbursed may also receive up to $51. Those unintentionally enrolled or unable to cancel their subscriptions will be next in line for refunds based on the total membership fees paid, up to $51. If the allotted settlement funds fall short of refunding all affected Prime customers, refunds will be distributed pro rata.

### How do I claim money from the Amazon Prime settlement?

No action is required at present, as Amazon is mandated to automatically refund eligible Prime customers by December 25. Following the completion of automatic payments, individuals still eligible to file a claim will receive notification via email and mail.

### When is the deadline to file a claim?

If you do not receive an automatic refund, you will be notified within 30 days after Amazon concludes automatic payments. Once you receive the claims form, you will have up to 180 days to submit it to Amazon via email, prepaid mail, or through the settlement website, which is currently inactive.
