An NBA star’s PSA inspired a man to check his mild symptoms. Doctors found an orange-sized mass

Warren Donaldson’s health scare began with seemingly minor symptoms that he initially brushed off. The 64-year-old experienced shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and dizzy spells, but it wasn’t until his condition worsened that he sought medical attention. Inspired by NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s public revelation about his diagnosis of atrial fibrillation, Donaldson decided to visit his primary care physician. What followed was a shocking discovery at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center – a mass the size of an orange growing inside his heart.

Dr. Shana Osho, a cardiac surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, explained that the mass, known as a pericardiac cyst, is a rare occurrence, with most cases being discovered incidentally during other tests. Donaldson’s case was particularly unique due to the size and location of the cyst within the muscle of his heart. The cyst was compressing his right ventricular outflow tract, disrupting the normal flow of blood to his lungs and causing his troubling symptoms.

Dr. Persida Drotar, a cardiothoracic surgeon at RWJBarnabas Health, led Donaldson’s treatment plan, which involved a complex open-heart procedure to remove the mass. The surgery was successful, but not without its challenges. Donaldson’s recovery included cardiac rehabilitation to regain his strength and regular follow-ups with a cardiologist to monitor his heart health.

Three months post-surgery, Donaldson is on the road to recovery. He has embraced physical activities like cycling and daily walks, activities that were once hindered by his symptoms. With a newfound appreciation for his health, Donaldson looks forward to rejoining his basketball team in the near future.

Donaldson credits Abdul-Jabbar’s public service announcement for prompting him to seek medical help and urges others to take their symptoms seriously. The importance of early detection and treatment cannot be overstated, as it can lead to successful outcomes like Donaldson’s. Inspired by Abdul-Jabbar’s story of survival, Donaldson now feels great and is grateful for the opportunity to share his own journey towards better health.
