Andrew Cuomo says that would keep Jessica Tisch as NYPD commissioner if elected mayor
Andrew Cuomo recently expressed his intention to retain Jessica Tisch as NYPD commissioner if he wins the mayoral race. During an appearance on CBS’s “The Point with Marcia Kramer,” Cuomo praised Tisch for her performance and stated that he would ask her to stay in her role.
When asked about other officials in Mayor Eric Adams’ administration that he would consider keeping, Cuomo specifically mentioned Tisch. This comes as a response to the ongoing speculation about potential changes in key positions within the city government.
Zohran Mamdani, the current front-runner in the mayoral race, has also indicated that he is considering retaining Tisch as NYPD commissioner. On the other hand, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa has expressed his support for Tisch and stated that he would keep her in the position if elected.
One of the central issues in the mayoral campaign has been public safety, with candidates proposing different approaches to address the city’s crime rate. Cuomo has proposed adding 5,000 police officers to the force, while Sliwa has vowed to increase the number by 7,000.
Mamdani, on the other hand, has faced criticism for his past statements calling for defunding the police and labeling officers as “racist” and “anti-queer.” He has since apologized for his language and clarified that he no longer holds those views, although he has not advocated for increasing the police force.
In response to concerns about public safety and mental health, Mamdani has proposed the creation of a new city Department of Community Safety to support mentally ill individuals and enhance crime-prevention programs. This initiative aims to shift the focus away from law enforcement officers having to address social issues and instead concentrate on combating serious crimes.
Despite their differences, Tisch and Cuomo have not always seen eye to eye. Tisch has criticized state criminal-justice reforms implemented during Cuomo’s tenure as governor, attributing the rise in crime to these changes. She specifically pointed to the “Raise the Age” law, which raised the age of criminal responsibility, as a factor contributing to a “consequence-free environment” for young offenders.
Overall, the mayoral race in New York City continues to evolve, with candidates outlining their plans for public safety and law enforcement as key components of their platforms. The decision to retain Jessica Tisch as NYPD commissioner underscores the importance of continuity and experience in addressing the city’s ongoing challenges.
