Angry crowd attends the first hearing on deadly Dominican nightclub collapse
Nightclub Owners Face Trial for Deadly Roof Collapse
In a courtroom in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the owners of a nightclub whose roof collapsed, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 230 individuals, made their first appearance for a hearing. Siblings Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, the proprietors of Jet Set, are facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and assault. If convicted, they could be sentenced to up to two years in prison.
The hearing, scheduled for April 6, was delayed by the presiding judge. Families of the victims, along with their attorneys, filled the courtroom. As the Espaillat siblings exited the premises, they were met with shouts of anger and accusations of murder from a group of individuals.
The tragic collapse on April 8 last year shook the nation, claiming the lives of 236 people and leaving more than 100 others injured. The authorities worked tirelessly for days to rescue individuals trapped beneath the rubble.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office has amassed a substantial amount of evidence linking the Espaillat siblings to the catastrophe. Despite this, representatives for the brothers declined to comment on the matter.
Following their arrest more than two months after the incident, prosecutors have accused the Espaillats of engaging in intimidation and manipulation of their employees. Antonio Espaillat, a prominent figure in the business world, is known for his ownership of high-end entertainment venues and numerous local radio stations.
The nightclub was packed with attendees enjoying a concert by popular singer Rubby Pérez when the roof gave way. Among the victims were Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province and sister of MLB star Nelson Cruz, as well as former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, who tragically passed away despite being rescued from the debris.
