Anker recalls more than 1.1 million power banks after some users report fires

Anker Innovations has issued a recall for 1.15 million portable chargers following reports of fires and explosions by some consumers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has warned that the lithium-ion battery inside certain “PowerCore 10000” chargers made by Anker can overheat, leading to potential hazards such as melting plastic components, smoke, and fires.

The company has taken this recall action as a precaution to ensure the safety of its customers. Anker has received 19 reports of fires and explosions involving the chargers, resulting in two minor burn injuries and over $60,700 in property damage. The recalled “PowerCore 10000” power banks have the model number A1263 and were sold online at Anker’s website, Amazon, eBay, and Newegg between June 2016 and December 2022 for approximately $27.

Consumers can check the serial number of their power bank on Anker’s website to determine if their device is included in the recall. Those who have purchased the affected chargers are advised to stop using them immediately and contact Anker for a free replacement. To receive a replacement, consumers need to submit a photo of the recalled power bank showing the model number, serial number, their name, date, and the word “recalled” written on the product.

It is important to note that recalled lithium-ion batteries should not be disposed of in regular trash or recycling streams due to fire risks. Proper disposal methods should be followed, following local guidelines. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in various products like electronics, appliances, cordless tools, and electric bikes, and incidents of overheating and fires have been linked to their usage.

Consumers are advised to cease using products with lithium-ion batteries if they notice any unusual signs such as odors, color changes, excessive heat, shape alterations, leaking, or strange noises. For more information and to register for the recall, affected customers can visit Anker’s website. Stay informed and stay safe with Anker’s recall process.
