Another ‘Loop Puncher’ charged with randomly attacking a woman in downtown Chicago

Man Charged with Randomly Attacking Woman Outside Chicago Board of Trade Building

A 44-year-old man, Thomas Knighten, has been charged with a violent attack on a woman outside the Chicago Board of Trade building, adding to the growing number of incidents known as the “Loop Puncher” attacks in the downtown area.

The alleged incident took place on February 6 when Knighten reportedly threw a bottle at a 23-year-old woman from Lakeview. Fortunately, the woman managed to duck, but the bottle hit a window of the historic Board of Trade building, causing significant damage estimated at $12,800.

Following this, Knighten then targeted a 54-year-old woman from Lynwood, grabbing her backpack, throwing her to the ground, and repeatedly punching her before fleeing the scene. The entire attack was captured on video, with both victims and a security guard from the building identifying Knighten as the assailant.

After weeks of investigation, Knighten was arrested and appeared in a detention hearing where Judge Luciano Panici Jr. ordered him to be held. The judge highlighted Knighten’s previous felony conviction and mentioned his “mental health conditions” as factors in the decision. Judge Panici Jr. emphasized that Knighten posed a threat to the community, especially since he targeted random and defenseless victims.

Charges against Knighten include aggravated battery in a public place, felony criminal damage for the shattered window, and misdemeanor assault for the physical attack on the second victim.

It is crucial to address these incidents and ensure the safety of individuals in public spaces. The community must remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to authorities to prevent further attacks.
