Anti-ICE LA riot leader seen giving gear to protesters indicted on conspiracy charges by DOJ

The Department of Justice has officially charged a man who gained notoriety for his involvement in distributing riot gear during the recent anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. Alejandro Orellana, 29, has been indicted on charges of conspiracy to aid and abet civil disorders, as detailed in the charging document obtained by FOX News. Orellana and his accomplices reportedly loaded a pickup truck with Uvex brand Bionic Face Shields, masks, water bottles, and other supplies, which they then distributed to protesters demonstrating against Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on June 9. A video showing Orellana handing out these supplies from the truck bed quickly went viral, leading to his identification by the FBI. Subsequently, FBI agents raided the house where Orellana was residing with his parents and took him into custody.

Orellana, a US Marine veteran and a UPS worker, is also a shop steward for the Teamsters Union and has been actively involved in advocating for social justice causes for years. He is associated with Centro CSO, an organization named in honor of labor leader and activist Cesar Chavez. Centro CSO has organized protests throughout Los Angeles calling for the charges against Orellana to be dropped. Their slogan, “An attack on one of us is an attack on the people’s movement,” underscores their commitment to solidarity and collective action.

In response to the charges against Orellana, his father, Francisco, stated that his son participated in the supply run at the request of friends and was unaware of the potential legal ramifications of his actions. The DOJ has recently brought charges against two other LA County residents for possessing Molotov cocktail bombs during the protests, as well as a Texas man for purchasing fireworks intended for use against law enforcement in LA. Additionally, the LA District Attorney has filed charges against over 40 individuals for protest-related crimes, including a recent batch of eight new indictments announced on Tuesday.

The events surrounding Alejandro Orellana’s arrest and the subsequent legal actions highlight the ongoing tensions and conflicts surrounding protests and demonstrations in Los Angeles. The intersection of activism, law enforcement, and legal consequences underscores the complexities of exercising one’s rights to free speech and assembly in a charged political climate. As the case progresses, it will be essential to monitor how the legal system navigates these challenges and balances the rights of individuals with the maintenance of public order and safety.
