Anti-Israel protester Mahmoud Khalil makes emotional return home, embraces wife, and holds telling press conference with AOC

Anti-Israel protester Mahmoud Khalil recently spoke out about his plans to continue advocating for Palestinian rights after being held in a Louisiana immigration detention facility for three months. Upon landing in New Jersey on his way back to New York City, Khalil criticized the US government for funding what he called a “genocide” in Palestine.

“I just want to go back and continue the work that I was already doing, advocating for Palestinian rights – speech that should actually be celebrated rather than punished, as this administration wants to do,” Khalil said at a press conference at Newark Liberty International Airport. He also expressed his determination to speak out against the injustices in Palestine, even if it meant facing detention or worse.

Khalil, 30, was arrested by federal immigration authorities on March 8 and spent over three months at the rural detention center as the Trump administration sought to deport him. The administration accused Khalil of engaging in activities aligned with Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist group responsible for attacks on Israel.

After being released on bail on Friday, Khalil was flown to Newark Airport to reunite with his wife and infant son, who was born while he was detained. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined Khalil at the airport, condemning the political persecution by ICE and vowing to resist it.

US District Judge Michael Farbiarz ruled that the government had not met the standards for detention, leading to Khalil’s release. Farbiarz noted that it was highly unusual for the government to detain a legal resident who posed no flight risk and had not been accused of violence.

Khalil’s release came with conditions, including surrendering his passport and travel restrictions limiting him to certain states where his immigration proceedings will continue. Despite the challenges he faced, Khalil remains committed to speaking out against injustices in Palestine and advocating for Palestinian rights.

The journey of Mahmoud Khalil serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity. His determination to continue his advocacy work highlights the ongoing struggle for justice and human rights in the Middle East.
