Antisemitic attackers violently target synagogue, Israeli restaurant in Australia
Recent antisemitic attacks in Australia have left the Jewish community in Melbourne living in fear and demanding action from officials. The attacks, which included an arson attack on a synagogue and a violent raid on an Israeli-owned restaurant, have raised concerns about the safety of Jewish people in the city.
The first attack occurred when assailants started a fire outside the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation while worshipers were having dinner inside. The quick response of the fire brigade prevented the synagogue from being destroyed in what could have been a terror attack. Avi Yemini, a reporter for Rebel News Online, highlighted the similarities to a previous unsolved firebombing of another synagogue in the city.
Later that same evening, a group of masked extremists targeted diners at the Israeli-owned restaurant Miznon, chanting anti-Israel slogans and causing chaos by throwing chairs and glassware. The situation escalated to violence, with terrified diners fleeing for safety. One protester was arrested by Victoria Police but was later released.
Another incident involved the setting of fire to three vehicles and spray-painting a nearby wall, with police describing all three incidents as containing “inferences of antisemitism.” The violent nature of these attacks has sparked outrage within the Jewish community and calls for condemnation from all sides of politics.
Alex Ryvchin, co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, urged for a united front in condemning these crimes and emphasized the need to confront those responsible with the full force of the law. The attacks have exposed a violent ideology operating on the fringes of society that must be addressed effectively.
Gideon Sa’ar, the Israeli minister of foreign affairs, condemned the attacks and called on the Australian government to take stronger action against antisemitism. The ECAJ reported a significant number of antisemitic incidents in Australia over the past year, highlighting the urgent need for measures to combat this hate.
Yemini pointed out that the recent attacks demonstrate the growing boldness of protesters and criticized the government for allowing anti-Israel sentiments to escalate unchecked. The Jewish community in Melbourne continues to live in fear, hoping for swift and decisive action to ensure their safety and security in the face of rising antisemitism.
