AOC mocked for war on trash on seedy Roosevelt Avenue
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently made headlines for championing the addition of dozens of new trash cans on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens. While she celebrated this initiative on social media, many criticized her for overlooking the rampant issues of prostitution and crime in the area.
The infamous “Market of Sweethearts” on Roosevelt Avenue is known for its sex workers lining the streets. Despite this well-known problem, AOC focused solely on the installation of trash cans, which sparked backlash from locals and politicians alike. Ramses Frias, a Republican candidate for City Council in Queens, condemned the move as a superficial gesture that fails to address the real issues plaguing the community.
Critics pointed out that AOC’s focus on trash cans was a distraction from the more pressing concerns of illegal activity and unsafe conditions on Roosevelt Avenue. Residents, merchants, and civic leaders have long called for action to combat prostitution, illegal street vendors, and gang-related crime in the area. They have even appealed to the FBI to investigate the alleged ties between the Market of Sweethearts and organized crime.
Despite the outcry, AOC defended her actions by highlighting her efforts to address sanitation concerns raised by local business owners. She also emphasized her advocacy for victims of sexual violence by requesting federal funding for nonprofits assisting these individuals. However, her detractors argue that these measures do not adequately address the root causes of the problems on Roosevelt Avenue.
The City Sanitation Department clarified that they replaced 48 missing trash baskets, not the 51 claimed by AOC, along a specific stretch of Roosevelt Avenue. Residents have criticized the new trash cans as inadequate to handle the amount of litter in the area, with overflowing bins becoming a common sight.
In conclusion, while AOC’s focus on improving sanitation may have positive intentions, it falls short of addressing the deeper issues of crime and exploitation on Roosevelt Avenue. The community continues to demand more comprehensive solutions to combat the persistent challenges facing the neighborhood.
